What are you tuning?

How many cents count as in tune. Five is about as fine as an ear can hear.
415 for baroque, 442 in some orchestras.
Tap a string twice to hear its note played to you.
If it is not hearing you properly

A tuner wants one string at a time, ringing on its own. Mute the others with your palm and let the note settle for a moment before you judge it — a string is always sharp for the first instant after it is plucked.

Low strings are the hard ones. A bottom E is 82 Hz and a five-string bass's B is 31 Hz, so pluck those firmly, closer to the neck than the bridge, and give them a second.
